Mario Kart DS

I’ve always felt slightly underwhelmed by the Mario Kart series, probably due to the fact that I missed out on having a SNES (SNES? Pah! Who needs a console when you have an Amiga? 
and the generally acclaimed ‘classic’ that is SNES Mario Kart.
I’ve played a few of its later incarnations on the N64 and the GBA but still can’t fight the feeling that I’d rather be playing F-Zero X by the time I’ve taken the first corner. Undoubtedly I must be missing ’something’- or maybe I give up too early on the 50cc stages as its so slow its like racing one of those battery-powered kids motorbikes that your posh friends always had – but never you.
