Fight Night Round 4

The first game to get me excited for quite a while, Fight Night Round 4 promises to build upon the success (in gameplay terms, if not commercially) of the magnificent FNR3.

In fact, FNR3 was so good I’m more than a little nervous of this sequel, fearing that EA will go all ‘Ready 2 Rumble’ on us, introducing unwanted graphical touches.

The biggest news so far seems to be the introduction of ‘Iron Mike’ Tyson on the roster – and a fleshed out career mode.

All good – let’s just hope Round IV delivers!

Street Fighter IV

Proof, if ever if was needed, that the world is back on track thanks to Barack Obama – a new Street Fighter game!

But this time it’s not some cashing in on a 2D remix on the online console networks, it’s a complete brand new game. Hurrah for the world.

It’s currently available to pre-order from all your favourite online shops (after all, who would trust a high street one now. Ha!) so Capcom better not screw up by doing some horrible Jar Jar Binks type CGI reimagining on Blanka.

Let’s hope the awesome car smashing minigame is also left intact, although I doubt it in these PC times, instead we’ll probably see Ken and Ryu donning luminous yellow jackets and sweeping leaves in a car park for two minutes.

Damn you, 21st Century.

Killzone 2

Sequel to perhaps the most disappointing game of the previous console generation.

Can Killzone 2 get it right? Will it knock Gears of War and Halo off their perches, or will it be another case of too little too late.

Still a PS3 exclusive, Killzone 2 is due for release on February 26th and promises big leaps in the online play department, with up to 32 online players.

The question is – is anyone still looking forward to this after getting stung by the hype of the original? Let us know in the comment box below.

Fallout 3 PS3

The PS3 incarnation of Bethesda’s Oblivion in Space. Probably identical to the Xbox version featured earlier this year, except with more graphic tearing. Ha!

Needless to say, if you loved Oblivion, have a Red Dwarf tattoo and think Serendipity is the best film EVAH, this is the game for you. Also one to invest in if you expect your job to be chopped in the recession, as it doubtless requires several man-months of effort to ‘get the most out of it’.

Mirrors Edge

An innovative art-house game from er…EA? What’s going on here?

Mirror’s Edge is visually stunning and is a great antidote to the endless swarm of futuristic shooters doing the rounds. Some may argue that it’s a great tech demo, and nothing more, but hey, I probably spent more time watching the infamous Amiga Juggler demo than I have ever done playing say, Call Of Duty.

So, support EA’s new direction and buy this game! Otherwise you will only have another Road Rash sequel in your hands in 2010 and I will blame you personally for killing the video game industry. Yes, you.

FIFA 09 PS3

It’s a sad day indeed for the PES series when all the former die-hard PES devotees I know, who cut their teeth on ISS, are all in agreement that FIFA has finally overtaken Konami’s baby.

Never mind the credit-crunch, Barack Obama or David van Day. This was THE big event of 2008!

Here’s hoping PES can shape up for the next iteration, loading up FIFA feels so wrong, from the moment you wince at the “EEEH AAAH SPORTS!” intro to the oh-so-hip soundtrack, but yet, against all the odds, it plays a damn fine game of football.

Will things ever be the same again?

Resistance 2

Oh look, another FPS! Actually I must be in the minority that actually enjoyed the prequel, it was no-nonsense shooter with no pretensions to be something above its stations a la BioShock.

So hopefully this sequel will provide more of the same, and give me another reason to power up the olde PS3 apart from watching halves of Blu-Ray movies. Halves, you say? Yep – the PS3 turbine fans kick in after 30 minutes or so meaning if you are watching a film which actually has dialogue and isn’t an explosion fest you better be pretty good at lip-reading, believe me.

Little Big Planet

After a typically Sonyesque marketing launch goof / stunt we can finally get our grubby little mitts on the game that seems to have grown in stature from a quirky offering from Sony’s “yes, we are still wacky Japanese! We love Clive James!” department, to the saviour of the PS3.

Of course, much of the talk has been about user-content, with gamers able to upload their epic level designs to everyone else. Inevitably 99% of these will be the author’s initials in Super Mario type blocks but I’m sure there will be a few phallic gems amongst them.

Call me old-fashioned, I like my developers to do the actual levels themselves, rather than just tossing the development tool-kit into the mix halfway through and saying “Sod It!”.

Call of Duty : World at War PS3

Relive the “joy” of World War II with the PS3 version of Call of Duty : World at War.

I have no doubt it is “more realistic than ever“.

Perhaps the next version will even kill the chavs that buy this game with some kind of super Acme death peripheral.

Ha Ha.

No, seriously. I’m sure it really is rather good and that, if mindless violence is your thing.
