Well, somehow, actually – No!

Yes, 42 All-Time Classics has carved itself into one of the must-have DS games, with many of the included gems worthy of a standalone budget release. You can now get this compilation for around the £15 mark, which makes each game worth around the price of a pack of Fruit Pastilles but twice as chewy.

Even if you only end up playing a few of the classic board games, such as chess, or draughts, you wont regret this.

Not sure where I stand with this one.

On one hand, it might inspire some children to put down My Sim Pony or More Murder Training, on the other it might be a cynical ploy by Nintendo to cash-in on the octogenarian demographic of the DS by offering copyright free classic books (and hence no pesky royalties for the Big N to pay) in one “convenient” package.

So what you get here are bori^H^H^H classic works from the likes of Shakey (‘speare, not Stevens unfortunately, it seems the lyrical wonder of Lipstick, Power and Paint is once again criminally overlooked), Austen (Drage?) and purveyor of overly masculine perfumes, Victor Hugo (Boss).

Mario Kart DS

I’ve always felt slightly underwhelmed by the Mario Kart series, probably due to the fact that I missed out on having a SNES (SNES? Pah! Who needs a console when you have an Amiga? and the generally acclaimed ‘classic’ that is SNES Mario Kart.

I’ve played a few of its later incarnations on the N64 and the GBA but still can’t fight the feeling that I’d rather be playing F-Zero X by the time I’ve taken the first corner. Undoubtedly I must be missing ‘something’- or maybe I give up too early on the 50cc stages as its so slow its like racing one of those battery-powered kids motorbikes that your posh friends always had – but never you.

Imagine Teacher

Remember the ‘Nintendo Seal of Quality‘ that prevented titles such as this? Wikipedia tells us that the ‘quality’ part was removed in 2003, perhaps the Big N already knew that success lay ahead in heading for Joe Public over Harry DeCore Gamer (see what I did there?).

Anyway, apparently this game lets you roleplay being a teacher, so you too can crush spirit and remove passion from young hearts – and that’s just level 1!

More Brain Training

Can’t get enough Brain Training? Why not get “More” (I wonder how much the exec who came up with this title got paid).

Same stuff as before for those battling with Alzheimers. Don’t know why old folk bother really. Why not just accept it and enjoy re-runs of Goodnight Sweetheart, each viewing as fresh as the last.

The game that has introduced the over-50s to gaming in a vain attempt to beat Alzheimers.

Apparently Japanese schoolkids no longer have to attend formal education and instead have to complete 20 minutes of Brain Training a day, with similar plans being drawn up by New Labour to combat rising teacher salaries.

Building on the success of the Brain Training series of video games, Professor Layton takes a more plot-oriented approach, set in a Victorian era dream world where you must use your powers of logic to crack the 130 brainteasers on offer (with more available to download each week).

It’s charming titles such as this that make you glad that Nintendo is back at the top of the gaming pile.
